University of Freiburg Ranked 5th in Germany

On the international level, the University of Freiburg performs particularly well in the categories of alumni and per capita academic performance, ranking 58th and 24th respectively. In the national comparison, it scores especially well in the indicators “staff with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals,” “Highly Cited Researchers,” and “per capita academic performance.” In these indicators, it holds 5th place in Germany. In the category “research articles in Nature and Science,” it ranks 8th.

Success in One of the World’s Most Prestigious Research Rankings

First published in 2003, the ShanghaiRanking is one of the oldest and most prestigious research rankings worldwide. Since 2009, it has been released annually by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization for higher education information. By now, the ranking compares more than 2,500 universities and publishes the results of the top 1,000 institutions.

The ranking compares universities based on six indicators: staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (Award); number of Highly Cited Researchers identified by Clarivate (HiCi); papers published in Nature and Science (N&S); papers indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (PUB); and per capita academic performance (PCP).
