Innovation Driver Microelectronics

Inaugural lecture of Prof. Kuhl on 31.03.2023: Latest applications and technologies in medicine and industry

On the occasion of his appointment as Professor for Microelectronics, Prof. Dr. Matthias Kuhl invited to his inaugural lecture titled "All about Transistors" in the large lecture hall of the Technical Faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. On this beautiful occasion, he presented his previous research achievements and his future plans.

The inaugural lecture was attended by family members, numerous employees, colleagues from various faculties, representatives of local and international companies, as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Prof. Dr. Roland Zengerle, and the Director of the Department of Microsystems Engineering, Prof. Dr. Thomas Stieglitz. Prof. Kuhl was also very pleased that even the entire team of his former employees at the Hamburg University of Technology had traveled from the far north.

Prof. Kuhl took the audience in the well-filled lecture hall on a journey through the development of microelectronics, starting with Maxwell's equations and transistor modeling to intelligent sensors and complex systems. Topics focused on bi-directional electrical neural interfaces and the data processing and manipulation they require, as well as mechanical, optical and electrochemical sensing in microelectronic circuits.

"Analog circuits are the indispensable foundation of modern sensor systems. The Laboratory for Microelectronics is therefore dedicated to researching innovative circuits for complex sensory applications in order to develop new measurement systems for medicine and industry and make them accessible to society," says Prof. Kuhl.

After the lecture, a buffet and drinks in the foyer of building 101 of the Faculty of Technology provided a stylish end to the afternoon. The get-together with poster exhibition offered a very nice opportunity for personal exchange.

About the person:
Prof. Kuhl studied electrical engineering (B.Sc. & M.Sc.) at the University of Wuppertal. Afterwards he did his PhD in the field of microelectronics at the Department of Microsystems Engineering at the University of Freiburg under Prof. Manoli. As a PostDoc and Junior Professor, he founded and led the group "Medical Microelectronic Devices and Implanatable Circuits" there, before taking over the leadership of the Institute of Integrated Circuits at the Technical University of Hamburg in 2018. In 2019, he took the opportunity to conduct research as a visiting professor at Standford University as part of an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. Since April 2022, Prof. Kuhl holds the professorship for microelectronics at the Faculty of Technology of the University of Freiburg.
