University of Freiburg successful in the ShanghaiRanking GRAS 2025

Among its top subjects are Robotic Science and Engineering, Medical Technology, and Biomedical Engineering

The University of Freiburg is represented in 31 of 57 subjects in the “Global Rankings of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025” by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy —three more subjects than the previous year, when it was listed in 28 of 55 subjects. Globally, the university ranks among the top 100 in five subjects and among the top 50 in three subjects. In total, rankings from around 2,000 universities from approximately 100 countries and regions were included in the evaluation.

Particularly noteworthy are the international rankings in:

  • Robotic Science and Engineering: 38th worldwide, 2nd in Germany
  • Medical Technology: 46th worldwide, 7th in Germany
  • Biomedical Engineering: ranked 76–100 worldwide, 1st–2nd in Germany

These rankings highlight the University of Freiburg’s strength in research and teaching at the interface of technology, medicine, and engineering.

The GRAS 2025 rankings cover 57 subjects across the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences. Only a limited number of universities are listed, and this varies by subject. The rankings are based on a total of nine indicators across five evaluation categories: “World-Class Faculty,” “World-Class Output,” “High Quality Research,” “Research Impact,” and “International Collaboration.” The weighting of the indicators varies between subjects.
