Postdoc at IMTEK receives GAMM doctoral award

28/03/2023. Martin Ladecký was awarded the Dr. Klaus Körper Prize of the Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) for his dissertation.

The dissertation entitled "Advanced spectral methods for computational homogenization of periodic media" carried out at the Czech Technical University in Prague deals with computational homogenization methods accelerated by the fast Fourier transform. FFT-based solvers are strikingly fast and memory-friendly approaches for the computational analysis of digitized material microstructures. A deeper mathematical understanding of these solvers helped Dr. Ladecký to see the connection with classical finite element approaches. In the thesis, he optimized computational costs and substantially improved the quality of the solutions, which was necessary to model problems with localized deformations like cracking or plastic yielding. Now Martin Ladecký is concentrating on the application of these methods for the optimization of metamaterials at the simulation laboratory of Prof. Lars Pastewka at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the Faculty of Engineering.

"In-silico design of high-resolution architectured microstructures is still a costly process, even for the state-of-the-art FFT-based solvers. In addition, we have to account for surface forces, such as adhesive contact, because they can be dominant in small microsystems", says Ladecký.

The award certificate will be presented during the opening of this year's GAMM Annual Meeting on Tuesday, 30.5.2023, in Dresden. The prize comes with a cash award of 250 € and two years' free membership of GAMM.
