Research college for a climate-neutral building stock

„Nobody renovates just for the sake of a better energy balance.“ This statement was made by Prof. Christoph Nytsch-Geusen of the Berlin University of the Arts at the first meeting of the Research College EnEff.Gebäude.2050, which took place last week at the Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) of the University of Freiburg. Prof. Nytsch-Geusen emphasized the importance of economic aspects for achieving the goal of a nearly climate-neutral building stock by 2050. The participants of the meeting were quick to agree: The findings of the research topic “Business models for energy efficiency” were considered very relevant for all scientific fields of the college. “This example demonstrates the added value of sharing our broad expertise within this network”, said Dr. Stefan Hess. He is research group leader at the Chair of Solar Energy Systems at INATECH and coordinates the research college in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and the University of Wuppertal.
At the beginning of the meeting, the funded scientists presented their research topics and individual working plans. Consecutively, the supervising professors jointly identified the key challenges, overlaps and synergy potentials of the five research topics. Prof. Thomas Lützkendorf of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT stressed that incorporating the perspectives of various actors within the building sector into the college´s research was a key aspect for identifying the core barriers of the “Wärmewende” (heating transformation) in the building field. Following this content-focused exchange, different scientific methods and standards were critically discussed within the group.
The meeting ended with a guided tour through the new city hall building “Rathaus im Stühlinger”, which opened its doors in November 2017. This plus energy building meets highest environmental and energy standards.
Background:
About 20 percent of Germany´s greenhouse gas emissions are related to the supply of low temperature heat for buildings. The German government aims at cutting the primary energy consumption of the building stock down to only a fifth of today’s value. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to both improve the thermal insulation of buildings and to increase the share of renewable energies for covering the remaining heat demand.
The research college EnEff.Gebäude.2050 accompanies the funding initiative “EnEff.Gebäude.2050 - Innovative projects to achieve a nearly climate-neutral building stock by 2050”. It is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the project EnEff2050Begleit. The objective is to facilitate exchange between research facilities, professionals and young scientists and in this way to contribute to the achievement of Germany´s climate protection goals within the building sector.
