Wolfgang-Gentner Young Scientist Award goes to scientist of the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK)

Dr. Pouya Rajaeipour received the Wolfgang-Gentner Young Scientist Award for his dissertation on "Optofluidic Adaptive Optics - Systems and Methods", which was awarded summa cum laude. Adaptive optics (AO) can improve image quality by correcting wavefront errors. Current AO systems are mainly based on reflective components, whose added value is often brought into question due to their complex integration. This work describes the development of refractive AO systems based on new components and software to simplify and extend the application of adaptive optics.

"This dissertation was a milestone in the history of our chair", says Prof. Dr. Hans Zappe, Head of the Gisela and Erwin-Sick Professorship for Micro-Optics at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg and supervisor of the dissertation. "Not only was the work scientifically groundbreaking, it also formed the basis for the first successful commercialisation."

The prize is donated by Volksbank Freiburg and endowed with 1,250€.
