Atom Probe Tomography
The German Research Foundation (DFG-Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) had decided to equip the University of Freiburg with an atom probe tomography tool, which is an absolute novelty on the campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
“The atom probe tomography is an essential tool for our group,” said Prof. Oana Cojocaru-Mirédin who lead the chair “Cross-scale material characterization”. “Atom probe tomography allows us to investigate a very wide range of materials in 3D and down to the sub-nanometer levels. With it, the unseen becomes seen.”
Even more interestingly, as mentioned by Prof. Oana Cojocaru-Mirédin, is that the atom probe tomography can be combined with many other microscopy techniques (so-called Correlative Microscopy) so that properties correlation on the exact same position on the sample can be for the first time understood.
“We are very excited to have soon the atom probe tomography in our group to employ it for the Re-Design of Energy Materials and Devices with better functionalities” concluded Prof. Cojocaru-Mirédin.
