The "research & development" award went to the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) of the University of Freiburg for the second time in succession. The junior research group "Porous Media" at the Lab for MEMS Application of Prof. Dr. R. Zengerle carries out research in the area of characterization and optimization of PEM fuel cells - in cooperation with the R+D serivce provider Hahn-Schickard. This includes the development of simplified manufacturing processes for one of the key components of fuel cells, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA).

"They have found an impressive way to make fuel cells significantly cheaper. And not only because their fuel cell requires less material for the polymer membrane, but also because the fuel cell can be manufactured using a single device", states laudatory speaker Holger Haas, Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH.

The f-cell award, the innovation prize for fuel cells, is sponsored by the state of Baden-Württemberg for application-oriented developments concerning fuel cells. The competition is organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy and Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH. The prize money is 10,000 euro in the category aimed at industrial users "products & market", and 10,000 euro in the category geared towards universities, academic associations and companies "research & development".
