University of Freiburg Becomes an ELIAS Virtual Centre of Excellence

Department of Computer Science Strengthens European AI Research

The University of Freiburg has been selected as an ELIAS Virtual Centre of Excellence, thereby reinforcing its role within the European network for excellent, trustworthy, and sustainable research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The University’s participation is primarily driven by ELLIS Unit Freiburg at the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering and the BrainLinks-BrainTools center.

The European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability (ELIAS) network brings together leading European research institutions with the aim of further developing machine learning and artificial intelligence methods for societal benefit. The Virtual Centre of Excellence forms the scientific backbone of ELIAS and focuses on the three core pillars of Sustainable AI: the planet, society, and individuals.

The University of Freiburg was selected following an evaluation of its institutional profile and proposal. In particular, its outstanding research performance in the field of AI and its clear commitment to the goals of ELIAS were highlighted.

For the Faculty of Engineering, joining the network represents a significant achievement. Researchers at the Department of Computer Science contribute their expertise to the European network, particularly in the areas of machine learning, computer vision, robot learning, automated reasoning, intelligent systems, and trustworthy AI. This appointment builds on the University of Freiburg’s strong AI research environment, which also includes the activities of the ELLIS Unit Freiburg.

As an ELIAS Virtual Centre of Excellence, Freiburg will in future collaborate even more closely with leading European AI centres. Planned activities include joint research projects, scientific exchange, mobility programmes for doctoral researchers and postdocs, as well as high-level workshops. In addition, links between fundamental research, societal impact, and entrepreneurial innovation are to be further strengthened.

Through its participation in ELIAS, the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Engineering will further expand its European collaborations and make an active contribution to the development of sustainable and responsible AI technologies.
