Excellence Review Visit at the Flugplatz Campus
On 2 June 2026, the University Tour “Pathways to Sustainability: From Challenges to Transformations” brought a seven-member international review panel from the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat) to the Flugplatz Campus as part of the University of Freiburg’s Excellence Strategy evaluation visit.
The tour included stops at the Hangar, the Ecotrons of the Collaborative Research Centre ECOSENSE (SFB 1537), and the Biomimetic Shell of the Cluster of Excellence Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS). Researchers from the focus area Pathways to Sustainability provided engaging insights into Freiburg’s sustainability research.
The tour highlighted three key areas of research. Inspired by natural role models, scientists are developing energy-autonomous and resource-efficient material systems for the future. Artificial intelligence and intelligent sensor technologies are helping to optimize sustainable processes and close material cycles. At the same time, insights from ecology, the social sciences, and the humanities are being integrated to shape sustainable transformations effectively and strengthen the resilience of ecosystems.
Guided by the motto “Sparking Change that Matters,” the tour demonstrated in a vivid and tangible way how research can generate momentum and enable transformation. May these sparks extend far beyond Freiburg.
