Another Endowed Chair at IMTEK

On 10 December 2012, the University of Freiburg and the sensor manufacturer SICK AG reached an agreement on their biggest joint project yet: The “Gisela and Erwin Sick Chair of Micro-Optics” will be inaugurated on 1 January 2013. The Waldkirch-based company will provide a total of one million euros in funding over a period of ten years for the named chair. The chair will be held by micro-optics expert Prof. Dr. Hans Zappe and will be located at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg.

The daughters of Gisela and Erwin Sick and SICK AG are sponsoring the endowed chair on the occasion of the former’s 90th birthday to recognize the work of the company’s founder and the continued commitment of Gisela Sick to the company and as a means of encouraging further cooperation between science and industry. “As an innovative company, we are very interested in intensive exchange between research and industry and are pleased with our good cooperation with the University of Freiburg in many areas,” explains Dr. Robert Bauer, Chairman of the Board of SICK AG.

The company chose micro-optics as the theme of the chair because this area of teaching and research is closely related to the work of SICK AG and strengthens the scientific profile of the Faculty of Engineering. Hans Zappe will devote his efforts within the context of the professorship to the area of optical sensor technology. The micro-optics specialist is co-director of the new collaborative research center SFB/Transregio “Planar Optronic Systems.” The scientists at this center aim to develop new optical sensors that can be fabricated as thin, flexible polymer films. Large-scale networks of such sensors could, among other things, be used to measure pressure, temperature, or chemical and biological substances. Possible areas of application include medicine, astronautics, and building technology.
