Julien Martens from the Professorship for Biomedical Microtechnology won third place in the DGBMT 2021 student competition, the largest German specialist conference for biomedical technology, with the submission of his master's thesis as a conference paper with the title Microchip Transfer Process for Implantable Flexible Biomedical Devices.
The requirements for flexible implants for recording nerve signals and for electrical stimulation have increased in recent years with regard to their functionality, miniaturization and spatial resolution. These requirements can best be met by embedding high-performance CMOS microchips in thin biocompatible polymer substrates. The resulting “chip-in-foil” systems combine the mechanical properties of a flexible polymer substrate with the performance of CMOS technology. As part of his master's thesis, Julien Martens investigated and developed a process to simultaneously transfer several CMOS microchips with edge lengths of less than 400 µm into thin polyimide substrates. He was able to do this successfully with common processes of microsystem technology in the clean room of the University of Freiburg. As a result, several microchips could be embedded in a single substrate, optimally aligned with one another, and brought to a target thickness of 100 µm in a final process step.
The research was carried out by Julien Martens in the group of Prof. Dr. Thomas Stieglitz at the Professorship for Biomedical Microtechnology at the Institute for Microsystem Technology - IMTEK at the University of Freiburg.
