Spindiag receives EU market approval for the Rhonda Corona PCR rapid test
The new test system just released to the market on November 16, 2020 as an CE-IVD-approved medical product by Sindiag GmbH is safe to operate, time-saving and designed for mobile use. Within a very short time, the Freiburg-based medical technology company Spindiag GmbH, together with Hahn-Schickard as research and development service provider and supported by the Laboratory for MEMS Applications of the Department of Microsystems Engineering - IMTEK at the University of Freiburg, developed the PCR-based corona rapid test based on an existing test system for the detection of antibiotic-resistant germs.
For 17 years, scientists led by Professor Dr. Roland Zengerle have been researching under the umbrella of the University of Freiburg and for many years with the support of Hahn-Schickard in the field of “Lab-on-a-Chip.” The market launch of the PCR rapid test for SARS-CoV-2 approved by Spindiag GmbH is now another impressive, successful example of the guiding principle of “visions to products” – that is, to transform visions into real products. Several times in the past, concrete product visions have emerged from basic research at the University of Freiburg, which could be seamlessly transferred into industrial application via applied research and development at Hahn-Schickard. They were brought to market either by established companies or by joint company foundations: BioFluidix GmbH was one of the first companies to emerge from this cooperation with the University in 2005. This cooperation was followed by others such as the life science company Cytena (2014), Spindiag GmbH (2016) or the biotech start-up Actome in 2018.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Housing in Baden-Württemberg supported the development phase of the SARS CoV-2 test at Spindiag and Hahn-Schickard with a grant of 6 million euros. The University of Freiburg continues to be involved in this project, which runs until March 2021. One of the first sites to introduce the innovative PCR rapid test is now the Klinikum Stuttgart (General Hospital in Stuttgart). As a regional COVID-19 supply center, Klinikum Stuttgart plays a prominent role in pandemic management through diagnostics and therapy. On November 16th, Minister of Economic Affairs Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut visited the hospital as the Spindiag Rhonda test system was being launched and underwent a test herself.
The Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG, German Physical Society) has already presented an award for the development and commercial utilization of the coronavirus rapid test in November 2020: the DPG Technology Transfer Award 2021 goes jointly to Spindiag, Hahn-Schickard, IMTEK and the Center for Technology Transfer (ZFT) of the University of Freiburg.
